Astronauts traveling to far distant planets might eventually bear a new symbol on their suits–the flag of Earth.
The minimalistic blue flag is intended to represent the entire planet Earth should space travelers set up habitats elsewhere in space. The Earth flag is a concept designed by student Oskar Pernefeldt from the Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm as his graduation project, reports WIRED UK.
In WIRED, Pernefeldt explains his concept: “Centered in the flag, seven rings form a flower — a symbol of the life on Earth. The rings are linked to each other, which represents how everything on our planet, directly or indirectly, are linked. … The blue field represents water which is essential for life — also as the oceans cover most of our planet’s surface. The flower’s outer rings form a circle which could be seen as a symbol of Earth as a planet and the blue surface could represent the Universe.”
Historically, flags hold much significance for people around the world, representing countries, cities and subcultures. For many, a flag can be a sacred symbol for their identity. Here are more concept images of the design:
