There’s no way we could do a Guide to Space Exploration without profiling our favorite galactic viper pilot–Kara Thrace, a.k.a Starbuck, from Battlestar Galactica. BSG is without a doubt one of our favorite television shows of all time. As most fans will tell you, it’s so much more than just a space show; it’s about war, segregation, post-traumatic stress, love, triumph, adventure and more. Starbuck, originally a male character in the original series, has become one of the most iconic women in science fiction. And lucky for us, she has no shortage of memorable gear and wearables. In the spirit of our Pop Culture Carry series, we tried to focus less on cosplay gear and more on real-world products. This is a bit tricky due to the abundance of Starbuck cosplayers (all of which are awesome). So we picked a mix of specific BSG gear and items that reminded us of Starbuck.
Starbuck is frequently seen joyfully smoking a cigar, especially after a battle with enemy Cylons.
Like real-world soldiers, Starbuck and her crew play card games during their limited down time. This includes Triad, a game developed for the TV show, and is said to be similar to poker. Here are the rules for Triad, if you’re interested.
On the shoulder of Starbucks’ pilot uniform, she wears a patch designating her role in the military.
To holster her many tools and weapons, Starbuck wears a utility belt over her cargo pants.
You know an item is from Battlestar Galactica when the corners are all cut off. Something about hexagonal shapes feels like science fiction, we suppose. Starbucks wears dog tags as part of her uniform, and also takes Anders’ tag when she makes a promise to rescue him.
Starbuck employs a multitude of weapons throughout the course of her journey, but notably uses these two firearms when navigating through cylon-infested planets.
The double tank top look is worn by nearly everyone on Battlestar Galactica. Rather than buying a cosplay set, we think recreating the look with your favorite tanks is a more reasonable option. We’re just hoping it becomes a trend; tactical space wear!
As a Galactica soldier and pilot, Starbuck must always be ready to jump into battle. She’s frequently seen wearing cargo pants as part of her standard uniform.
In Pop Culture Carry, we explore and compile the gear used by some of our favorite characters in popular media. The rules: finding real-world counterparts to our favorite fictional gear, gadgets and wearables.
