Pop Culture Carry: Tris Prior, Divergent

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t so completely excited about the abundance of female-led dystopian stories these days. The Divergent trilogy is the kind of story I dreamed about as a young girl, but it’s still a great story to enjoy as an adult. And with the first installment of the Divergent series coming to theaters this Friday, heroine Tris Prior is a perfect choice for our latest Pop Culture Carry. For those unfamiliar, Divergent is a story about a society in which everyone is divided into five factions—Abnegation, Amity, Erudite, Candor and Dauntless—based on their personality traits. But sixteen year old Tris Prior is Divergent, which means she falls between several factions. Being Divergent is considered dangerous, and after Tris leaves her native selfless Abnegation in favor of the reckless but brave Dauntless, she begins to see her society unraveling. What I enjoyed most about this story was the world-building in a futuristic Chicago, and Tris’ ever-changing relationship with her family as they become separated by faction. So for this Pop Culture Carry, we pulled from Tris’ experiences in both Dauntless and Abnegation, as well as her Divergent personality.

Topshop Long Sleeve Gray Dress

At the beginning of the story, Tris is still a part of the Abnegation faction, who only wear gray. She also wears gray during the Choosing ceremony, and is identified as Abnegation by her gray dress.

Jack Ripper Throwing Knives

Early on in Tris’ combat training in Dauntless, she learns how to throw knives. This is also how she begins to bond with her fellow Dauntless initiates.

Demobaza Denim Combat Leggings

Demobaza clothing is the epitome of the Dauntless outfits Tris wears once she’s initiated during the faction. Dauntless are known to wear black, somewhat futuristic clothing, but at the end of the day, everything they wear must suit them well in the event of combat.

Adidastar Tank

This top is a great athletic top with a unique meshing that would allow Tris to showcase her growing collection of faction tattoos.

Conair Bobby Pins

Tris’ hair becomes a way to visually note her character progression. In Divergent, she is used to wearing her hair pinned back modestly, but later tries out new ways to wear it when she joins Dauntless.

Sephora Kohl Pencil

Dauntless offers Tris more self-expression than she has ever known in her short life—and with this comes a new appreciation for transforming her physical appearance, which includes makeup. Eyeliner in particular is what helps Tris see her potential.
